To achieve your Group Personal Training Specialization, you simply have to:

  1. 1) Register in the NASM GPTS program.

  2. 2) Complete the self-guided online study materials in your own time from the comfort of home.

  3. 3) Pass the certification exam.

After completing the study materials, you’ll take an online exam to earn your Group Personal Training Specialization. This exam features:

  • • 100 multiple-choice questions

  • • 90 minutes to complete

  • • 70% or higher required to pass

  • • 3 exam attempts

CURRICULUM

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Chapter 1: Introduction to Group Personal Training
Understand the different types of group training based on volume, identify uses of the OPT™ Model within group personal training, and describe instructor and client benefits.

Chapter 2: Basic and Applied Sciences
Define the components of the kinetic chain and learn to use strategies that maximize its functions in a group training setting.

Chapter 3: Group Exercise Selection and Technique
Determine exercise selection using client group size, understand common mistakes that group instructors overlook, and compare exercises used in groups with minimal equipment to exercises with common training modalities.

Chapter 4: Designing Group Personal Training Programs
Identify best practices in setting up group training programs based on volume, learn to use assessment protocols, and create group programs.

Chapter 5: Coaching and Cueing
Learn to determine and implement coaching techniques for various group sizes, and discover communication strategies and methodologies to increase participation.

Chapter 6: Building Your Business
Determine marketing strategies to create and retain group training clientele, develop pricing packages, and choose appropriate target markets.

After the completion of the course, you will take an online final exam from the comfort of your own home, or wherever you prefer to take tests, that consists of 100 questions. Each question will be multiple-choice. The exam is timed and cannot exceed 90 minutes. To pass, you need a score of 70% or higher. Don’t fret though, if you score below that, you have up to 3 attempts to pass.

In the Group Fitness Instructor Certification program, you’ll learn how to lead groups of up to 40-50 participants in a more predefined workout like yoga, Zumba®, indoor cycling, and so on.

In the Group Personal Trainer Specialization, you’ll learn to lead smaller groups of up to 10 people through more individualized workouts.

Group Personal Trainer sessions are typically more expensive than Group Fitness sessions.

Group classes like these can help scale your business by reaching clients and participants who might not have been able to afford a personal trainer on their own.

In addition, group personal training clients and participants often have greater retention due to the team-like atmosphere during the sessions.

There are no prerequisites for this course, although a personal trainer certification or a fitness specialization is recommended.

You can complete the NASM GPTS Certification program in 2-4 weeks.

Absolutely! You can complete the Group Personal Trainer Specialization while also working full-time. The study material is 100% online and self-paced, and can be accessed on a computer, or a mobile device such as a phone or tablet.

The Group Personal Trainer Specialization exam is taken online inside your student portal. You'll have 365 days from the date of purchase to take the exam. This exam features:

  • • 100 multiple-choice questions

  • • 90 minutes to complete

  • • 70% or higher required to pass

  • • 3 exam attempts

There is no need to recertify this specialization.
